Sustainable Living

Driving.

With 5 kids and three of them under 5, it is impossible not to drive. Driving however, is definitly not good for the environment. As a family we try to limit the amount we drive by using public transport where possible or walking.

We live in an area that is close to schools, shops and bus routes. We are aware of parents who drive their kids to school (it would take them 10-15 mins to walk!) for many reasons. We live quite close to the school the children go to and the kids always walk. Even if we have somwhere to go after school, the kids walk home first. Besides, there is too much traffic around the school area which makes it quicker to walk!

We also purchased a diesel powered motor vehicle as diesel is more eco-friendly than petrol. It would be great if we could find a fuel source that doesn't rely on fossil fuels though. A lot of motor manufacturers are working on electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles. Some have even tried compressed air as a power source. Unforutnately acceptance of these new tchnologies is going to be slow. To start with they are going to be too expensive for the normal consumer. As time goes on and volume of production increases, costs will come down.
