Sustainable Living

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.

As part of our gardening, we Bokashi all our kitchen waste with the exception of bones. Bokashi is an indoor Japanese composting starter. All food and meat scraps can go into a Bokashi bucket. A special seed mix is sprinkled over top with each addition of scraps. When the bucket is full, the contents can be buried straight into the garden or compost heap.

The seeds used, start a fermentation process so all the scraps break down quickly. A side effect of the process is Bokashi juice. This is an awesome fertiliser that can be mixed with water 100:1

Also we try to be aware of all our shopping purchases to make sure the packaging is not over the top, and where possible recyclable. For that reason we also tend to buy in bulk where possible. And we try to buy ingredients we can cook with! Not too many of those pre-prepared sauces etc........Learn how to make your own! It's more fun and most of the time it tastes better.

When we go shopping, we also try to take our own bags, rather than get plastic. Any plastic bags we do get, end up as bin liners.

Through being careful, our family of 7 has 1 full recycling bin each fornight and a 1/2 full rubbish bin.
